History

First United Church (formerly First Methodist) was one of Hamilton's most historic landmarks (see photograph at right). Located in the heart of the city, the church symbolized the faith and belief of the city.

Fire engulfed First United Church in the early morning of Saturday, September 13, 1969. The building was destroyed, but the spirit and determination of the congregation lived on.

Instead of rebuilding their church, the people decided to move in a new direction and offer much needed housing for older citizens in the downtown area. After a tremendous amount of work, the official opening of First Place was held in March 1977 on the same grounds that First United used to occupy.

In common with some other area churches, our congregation began as a preaching point on an old Methodist circuit in the 1790s. We've been meeting in buildings dedicated for worship since 1801.
